FURY AT AXING OF COACH SERVICE

12.00.00am GMT Sat 6th Mar 2010

The chairman of Alton Town Council's Planning & Transportation committee has condemned National Express for axing the town's remaining daily coach service to and from London via. Heathrow on the quiet without consultation.

Cllr Robert Saunders said "I went onto the National Express website to book tickets for a trip up to London later this month and was horrified to discover that Alton had been deleted from the list of destinations.

"It is absolutely outrageous that a town such as Alton on the boundary of a proposed National Park is not served by what was is meant to be the country's long distance public transport provider. There has been no consultation on this matter.

"Without question the service has been very well used and the Town Council is in the process of installing two new bus shelters in Draymans Way at bus stops which were used by the coach service."

Cllr. Saunders said that he would be seeking approval from the Town Council to raise this matter with National Express and Michael Mates.
