Letters: LIB DEMS VINCE CABLE UNVEILS FAIR TAX CAMPAIGN

9.08.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 2nd Oct 2009

Vince Cable

Dear Sir, At Liberal Democrat party conference last week economics expert Vince Cable launched the Lib Dems campaign for Fairer Taxes.

We promise a total overhaul of our tax and benefit system not seen since the days of Lloyd George.

Liberal Democrats say fairer taxes not higher taxes - our priority is to make middle and lower income families better off.

In contrast the Conservative's top priority is cut taxes for Millionaires.

Lib Dems say if you are on minimum wage you should not pay income tax at all. If you are earning £10,000 per annum or less you will pay no income tax. (This lifts 4 million low paid workers and pensions out of poverty immediately.)

We will pay for this by closing tax loop holes for the super rich and introduce a Mansion Tax on properties worth over a million pounds.

Our Green Tax switch will shift tax away from work, savings and innovation and tax pollution instead.

The Conservative candidate Mr Hinds hasn't lived here very long but his feeble attempts to scaremonger the people of East Hampshire with a letter probably penned for him by Central Office doesn't seem to be working. The latest opinion polls show the Liberal Democrats on 25% of the vote nationally and already overtaking Labour. Here's a tip for you Damien, don't attack on an issue your party is weakest on.

Liberal Democrats are not going to take any lessons about fairness from the Conservatives ,

The Tories are the party of privilege. The last time they were in power they gave us the hated poll tax. The rich got richer and the poor went to wall. They have not a clue what its like for real people - their only tax plans are to give tax breaks to the super rich.

Nor does world renown economist Vince Cable need any lessons from a lightweight like George Osborne . Mr Osborne's wants to be Chancellor of the Exchequer, yet he has never had a real job in his life, his only experience is as Tory researcher. As someone unkindly remarked to me the other day "poor George was born with a silver foot in his mouth", the sad truth is that gaff prone George Osborne has become a total liability for the Conservatives and is their weakest link. Can you imagine him controlling the Country's finances? No, nor can we!

In these dark days of recession, when we are all struggling to make ends meet we need a radical overhaul of the corrupt system that got us into this mess and safe pair of hands to look after the economy - that person is Liberal Democrat Vince Cable.
