Local by-law to stop parking on grass verges

Published on Fri 26th Sep 2008

Cllr. Bob Evans

ALTON Liberal Democrats are proposing to apply for the implementation of a local by-law to prevent the parking of vehicles on grass verges throughout the town.

The motion was proposed by longstanding Lib Dem town councillor, Bob Evans.

Chair of Alton Town Council's Planning & Transportation committee, Cllr Robert Saunders said "I regard Roadside verges as an amenity, which enhances the attractive landscaped character of the town and its estates. It is important that they are adequately protected and properly maintained. It can not only reduce the verge to an unsightly state, but it can also obstruct the highway and

compromise the safety of pedestrians and wheelchair users. Verge parking can also cause a hazard to other motorists especially if the vehicle is parked on a bend, narrow road or junction."
